MFA Thesis Exhibition in 3 Parts
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago

While studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and frequenting The Newberry Library of Chicago, I observed vellums from the fifteenth-century and the type specimens of early twentieth-century. The following three sections of images showcase my thesis exhibition presented at The Sullivan Galleries in Chicago, IL during the Spring 2009.

Coauthored Colophon_bookmark2
Coauthored Colophon | 9 coauthored colophons
In my study of type design, the colophon is a tool to better understand the role of the book designer and the type designer as authors. The nine coauthored colophons featured here subsided from a collection of thirty.

Type As Relic (detail)_bookmark
Type as Relic | 8 Wooden Glyphs
A glyph is a graphic representation of a character. Each glyph represents one of three typefaces designed and describes a variation of the definition of penman.

An Orientation Shift_bookmark2
An Orientation Shift | Broadside/Type Specimen
The form of a broadside has existed as a sheet of paper printed on one side only requiring a quarter turn of the book to orient the image for reading. Examining the typeface design specimen in an early portfolio vellum form, catalog booklet or broadside sheet expanded my notion of the role of a typeface, the type designer and the critical author.
